Lesser banded hornet - Hoornaar

De hoornaar op de foto is hout aan het kauwen voor het nest. De houtpulp wordt vermengd met speeksel en door de hoornaar omgezet in een papiersubstantie waarvan het nest wordt gebouwd.
The hornet in the photo is chewing wood to make the papery pulp used to build her nest. Wood pulp is mixed with saliva and converted by the hornet into a paper substance from which an elaborate tiered nest is made which may house thousands of individuals.

This makes for a very neat little study and, yes, I'd thought she was gathering nest material there. Seen this close, insects often look like a kit of parts !

A very fine macro. When I was a kid we had a windshield made of thin bamboo sticks. All summer through the use to take parts from that and I can still here that sound.

Indrukwekkende grote dieren zijn dit! Heb er laatst eentje in m'n eigen tuin gespot, helaas geem ooie foto van kunnen nemen omdat hij op een hoge struik zat
Bijzonder om te zien hoe enorm smal dat middendeel van het lijf is!

Weer goed in detail gefotografeerd. Ik vind het toch wel enigzins jammer dat de vleugeltjes niet scherp zijn. Dat trekt mijn aandacht een beetje weg.
